amending TOC

Post by solarqueen »

Hello, Because of the nontraditional formatting of my book, I can't include a title in my chapter number. I would like to include the title in the TOC. When I type it in I get no klaxons or threatening messages, but the next time I update the TOC, my edits go away. Is there any way to get the edits to stick in the TOC and not affect the H1 text in the chapters in any way? Example: TOC entry = Chapter 1, I want it to read Chapter 1: Festival. This file will eventually be saved as an epub. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

If I understand your situation correctly, I would suggest to use the "heading-less" chapters. Each chapter heading formatted with the "Heading 1" style would include the text that you would like to appear in the eBook's TOC. Then each such heading would be followed by a paragraph formatted with a non-"Heading N" style. This would be a fake heading looking like a heading but containing a different text. All the "Heading 1" paragraphs should be then formatted with strikeout.

Please see attached sample document file. When saved as eBook, it gets displayed by ADE in the following way:
