Columns

Post by Rewlach »

One of the desirable features I have recently found in the new version is COLUMNS. It works very well, and I am glad it is there.

One amazing thing is that features are added, but the program seems to stay the same size. Which is one reason why I like Atlantis. IT IS NOT BLOATWARE unlike some we could mention.

I need to check whether a page layout generated with columns in Ocean Mind is OK to be read and printed in Nova. I do not need Nova to create columns, just to print them correctly.

I have links to download Atlantis from any web site I run, and my main project has a number of old out of copyright books which I have posted using Atlantis to generate the file. It is by far the most efficient programme for this.

Anyway, I will test it this week and answer this query myself on the latest Atlantis Nova which I use at work. I assume my registration fee for Ocean Mind which I have at home does not cover my work computer.

Regrettably Atlantis Nova could not properly render documents containing newspaper columns because Atlantis Nova does not support columns.

If you are a registered user of Atlantis Ocean Mind, you do not need to re-register. You could use the same registration code both at home and at work.

Now that is a friendly approach to registration fees. A bit like the AA idea that you are the Member, not the car, so your membership even covers someone else's car if you are a passenger at the time a problem arises.

Most software providers tend to view work and home as separate registrations of a program. So software you have bought at home is not valid to use at work. Your work place has to pay another registraion fee.

Of course, I take it that is only for my computer while at work, and that it would not cover the whole firm.

Since I link to Atlantis from my web site because I post documents (archived books) created using Atlantis, I shall have to stick to Atlantis Nova compatibility with what I post.

What I was looking for was not the ability to create columns in Nova. Only the abilty to open a document with columns created by Ocean Mind, and not to crash but either -
to display and print the document in single column mode without jumbling up the text ;
or to display and print the multi-column text.

Of course, Atlantis Nova could open ANY document created by Atlantis Ocean Mind or by another word processor. But if a document is formatted in two (or more) columns, Atlantis Nova could open this document but it would be displayed & printed as it was formatted in single column mode.

Atlantis Nova simply skips document components which it does not understand or support.

By the way, you could install both Atlantis Ocean Mind and Atlantis Nova to the same computer. In this way you could conduct the required compatibility tests.

Have you thought of producing an Atlantis Reader ?

Strip out all the writing components, and make it able to simply to print any document formatted by Ocean Mind with the full range of formatting. Probably 300KB

Of course, like Adobe Acrobat Reader you would include on-screen advertising for the full Atlantis.

Atlantis seems to be like my tax code. That seems to be the same as it was 5 years ago. Atlantis has more and more features, but seems to be the same size as the first release of Ocean Mind.

Well, your idea is interesting but "Atlantis Reader" would have a limited usage at this development stage because the present version of Atlantis Ocean Mind does not support a few important "top-end" features: tables, footnotes, headers/footers. The main task is to add these features to Atlantis. Then we could think about "Atlantis Reader".
